The most known award is the Newberry
Award for novels, however there are many more than that. The Pura
Belpre Award is given annually to a Latino/Latina author and illustrator
celebrating their culture. The Sibert Award is given to the author/
illustrator of the most distinguished informational book published in the
US. The Stonewall Book Award is given to GLBT books. The Schneider
Family Book Award is given for a book that expresses that of a disability
for a child or adolescence audience. NCTE Orbis Pictus Award and the YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction are given
to outstanding nonfiction for kids. From
our own state we have the Lone Star List
to encourage recreational reading in grades 6, 7, 8.
There are so many lists that help with choosing quality literature
for adolescents. Some of the lists
overlap, but to me that just says what a good book it is. I enjoyed learning about some lists I was not
aware of such as Great
Graphic Novels for Teens,
Best
Fiction for Young Adults,
and Quick
Picks for Reluctant Readers. I
wish I had known about some of these as I taught my reading workshop classes
and other classes for struggling readers.
